How It Works
Olmesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It blocks angiotensin II (AT1) receptors, causing blood vessels to relax and widen, which lowers blood pressure and reduces strain on the heart.
Directions for Use
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow with water; do not stop suddenly without medical advice. If a dose is missed, take it when remembered unless it is close to the next dose.
Not recommended in pregnancy (can harm the unborn baby); stop and contact doctor if pregnancy occurs. Use caution in kidney disease, liver impairment, dehydration/low salt (may cause excessive BP fall), and in patients with high potassium; periodic monitoring of BP, kidney function and serum potassium is advised. Rare: severe chronic diarrhea/weight loss (sprue-like enteropathy) has been reported with olmesartan—seek medical attention if persistent diarrhea occurs. Use caution when driving if dizziness occurs.
Drug Interactions
ACE inhibitors or aliskiren (higher risk of kidney impairment/hyperkalemia, contraindicated with aliskiren in diabetes), potassium supplements/potassium-sparing diuretics (risk of hyperkalemia), NSAIDs (may reduce effect and worsen kidney function), lithium (increased lithium levels/toxicity), other antihypertensives/diuretics (additive BP lowering)
