Monograph
Otibid Ear Drops is a prescription medicine containing Beclometasone (0.025%) + Chloramphenicol (5.0%) + Clotrimazole (1.0%) + Lidocaine (2.0%). It is used for asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bacterial infection, gut infection, skin infection, dental infection, fungal skin infection, ringworm, Athlete's foot, dandruff, nail fungal infection, minor injuries, wound care and first aid.
Warm the bottle by holding it in your hand for a minute, lie with the affected ear facing up, put the drops in and stay in that position for a few minutes. The dose and how long you take it depend on what you are being treated for and how you respond. Do not take more, or for longer, than your doctor has advised.
The side effects seen most often with Otibid Ear Drops are throat irritation, hoarse voice, oral thrush and tremor. Most are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. Tell your doctor if one persists or worries you.
Before you start, tell your doctor about any liver, kidney or heart problem, whether you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every other medicine you take, including supplements and ayurvedic preparations. Some of them can change how Otibid Ear Drops works.
Most side effects of Otibid are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:
Stop the medicine and get help at once for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
Warm the bottle by holding it in your hand for a minute, lie with the affected ear facing up, put the drops in and stay in that position for a few minutes. Do not let the dropper tip touch the ear. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.
This medicine combines 4 active ingredients: Beclometasone, Chloramphenicol, Clotrimazole and Lidocaine. Beclometasone is breathed straight into the lungs, where it opens the airways and reduces the swelling inside them, so less of the medicine reaches the rest of the body. Chloramphenicol kills or stops the growth of the bacteria causing your infection. Clotrimazole kills the fungus on the skin by breaking down the membrane that holds its cells together. Lidocaine supports the care of a minor injury or wound.
Know which of your inhalers is the reliever and which is the preventer. A preventer must be used every day even when you feel well; a reliever is for symptoms. Seek emergency care if your reliever is not working, if you cannot speak a full sentence, or if you are using the reliever far more often than usual. Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after every steroid inhaler dose to prevent thrush and hoarseness. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to watch your technique — poor technique is the commonest reason an inhaler seems not to work. Use a spacer if one has been advised, particularly for children. Finish the whole course even after you feel better. Do not drink any alcohol while taking metronidazole, ornidazole or tinidazole, or for the period after the course that your doctor states — the combination causes severe flushing, vomiting and a racing heart. Report severe or watery loose motions during or after the course rather than treating them yourself. Tetracyclines stain developing teeth and are avoided in young children and in pregnancy. Antibiotics do not work against colds, flu or most sore throats, which are caused by viruses. Keep applying for the full period your doctor stated, usually two to four weeks, and for a week or two after the rash has cleared. Stopping when it looks better is why ringworm keeps coming back. Apply a little beyond the visible edge of the patch — the fungus extends further than the redness. Do not use a combination cream containing a steroid on a fungal infection unless a doctor has specifically prescribed it. The steroid calms the redness while the fungus spreads underneath. See a doctor if the rash covers a large area, involves the scalp or nails, or has not improved in two weeks — these usually need tablets as well. For external use only, unless the pack says otherwise. See a doctor for a deep, dirty or heavily bleeding wound, an animal bite, or any wound showing signs of infection. Check that your tetanus cover is current after any dirty or penetrating wound.
Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next application, skip the missed one — applying extra does not make up for it.
An overdose of this medicine can cause a racing heart, marked tremor, headache and a fall in blood potassium. It can cause vomiting, severe loose motions and nerve symptoms. It is unlikely from skin use; swallowing the preparation may cause stomach upset. It is unlikely from external use. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.
Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Discard the bottle one month after you first open it. Keep out of the reach of children.
