Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic that modulates neurotransmitters in the brain by antagonizing serotonin (5-HT2) and dopamine (D2) receptors. The sustained-release formulation provides gradual drug release to help maintain stable blood levels and reduce symptom fluctuations.
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually once daily (often in the evening). Swallow the SR tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew, or split. Can be taken with or without food; avoid abrupt stopping unless advised by doctor.
Sleepiness/drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, weight gain, increased appetite, orthostatic hypotension, fast heartbeat, fatigue, blurred vision
Prescription-only antipsychotic. May cause significant drowsiness—avoid driving/machinery until you know its effects. Risk of orthostatic hypotension and falls, especially when starting or increasing dose. Can increase blood sugar, cholesterol and weight; monitor glucose/lipids/weight. Rare but serious: neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, seizures, severe allergic reactions. Use caution in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis (increased mortality risk). Monitor for suicidal thoughts, especially in young adults. Dose adjustment may be needed in liver impairment.
Alcohol and other CNS depressants (increased sedation), antihypertensives (additive low BP), CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole/itraconazole/clarithromycin/ritonavir (increase quetiapine levels), CYP3A4 inducers such as carbamazepine/phenytoin/rifampicin (reduce effect), QT-prolonging medicines (additive risk), grapefruit juice (may increase levels)
