Uses & Benefits
Treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders; may be used for acute and chronic psychosis as prescribed by a psychiatrist.
How It Works
Sulpiride is an atypical antipsychotic that primarily blocks dopamine D2 receptors in the brain. This helps reduce psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions and thought disturbance.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, preferably at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole (do not crush/chew if it is OD/extended release). Can be taken with or without food; avoid abrupt discontinuation unless advised.
Side Effects
Drowsiness, dizziness, restlessness (akathisia), tremor/extrapyramidal symptoms, constipation, dry mouth, nausea, weight gain, increased prolactin (breast tenderness/galactorrhea, menstrual irregularities), sexual dysfunction
Warnings & Precautions
Prescription-only antipsychotic—use under psychiatric supervision. May cause drowsiness/dizziness: avoid driving or operating machinery until effects are known. Risk of extrapyramidal symptoms, tardive dyskinesia and neuroleptic malignant syndrome (seek urgent care for fever, rigidity, confusion). Can raise prolactin; caution in prolactin-dependent tumors. Use caution in elderly (higher risk of falls); not recommended for dementia-related psychosis due to increased mortality risk (class warning). Use with caution in seizures/epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, cardiovascular disease; may prolong QT—caution in patients with arrhythmias, electrolyte abnormalities or those on QT-prolonging drugs. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney impairment.
