Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain), rate control in tachyarrhythmias; also used in stable chronic heart failure as part of combination therapy (as advised by doctor)

Metoprolol is a cardioselective beta-1 blocker that reduces the effect of adrenaline on the heart. It slows heart rate and decreases cardiac contractility, lowering blood pressure and reducing oxygen demand of the heart.

Tablet (likely sustained/extended release): take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time, preferably with or immediately after food. Swallow whole; do not crush/chew/split extended-release tablets. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.

Tiredness, dizziness, slow heart rate (bradycardia), low blood pressure, headache, nausea, diarrhea/constipation, cold hands and feet, sleep disturbances

May cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected. Do not stop abruptly (risk of rebound hypertension/angina). Use with caution in asthma/COPD (may worsen bronchospasm), diabetes (can mask hypoglycemia symptoms), peripheral vascular disease, thyroid disorders, liver impairment, and in patients with bradycardia, heart block, or acute decompensated heart failure. Monitor pulse and BP regularly.

Other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), calcium channel blockers like verapamil/diltiazem (bradycardia/heart block), digoxin (bradycardia), antiarrhythmics like amiodarone (conduction issues), clonidine (rebound hypertension on withdrawal), NSAIDs (may reduce antihypertensive effect), insulin/oral antidiabetics (masked hypoglycemia), CYP2D6 inhibitors e.g., fluoxetine/paroxetine/quinidine (increase metoprolol levels)

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
