Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); helps reduce risk of cardiovascular events (heart attack/stroke) in high-risk patients as advised by doctor
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It blocks AT1 receptors, causing blood vessels to relax and widen, which lowers blood pressure and reduces strain on the heart.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow with water; do not stop abruptly without medical advice.
Dizziness, headache, fatigue, low blood pressure, increased potassium (hyperkalemia), nausea, back pain
Avoid use in pregnancy (can harm the unborn baby). Use with caution in kidney disease, liver impairment, dehydration/low blood volume, and in patients with high potassium. Monitor blood pressure, kidney function (creatinine) and serum potassium, especially after starting or dose changes. Seek help for severe dizziness/fainting or signs of angioedema (swelling of face/lips/throat).
Potassium supplements/salt substitutes, potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, amiloride), ACE inhibitors/aliskiren (higher risk of kidney problems and hyperkalemia; contraindicated with aliskiren in diabetes), NSAIDs (may reduce effect and worsen kidney function), lithium (toxicity risk), other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
