Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), especially when single-drug therapy is not adequate; helps reduce risk of cardiovascular events by controlling blood pressure.
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels by blocking angiotensin II action, lowering blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that increases urine output to reduce fluid volume and vascular resistance, further lowering blood pressure.
Take as directed by physician, usually once daily at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food; swallow with water. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function and electrolytes is advised; do not stop abruptly without medical advice.
dizziness, headache, fatigue, increased urination, nausea, low blood pressure, electrolyte imbalance (low potassium/low sodium), increased uric acid, muscle cramps
Not recommended in pregnancy; stop and consult doctor if pregnancy occurs. Use with caution in kidney or liver disease, dehydration, low sodium/potassium, gout, diabetes, or history of angioedema. May cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected. Periodic monitoring of serum creatinine, potassium, sodium, uric acid and blood glucose may be needed. Maintain adequate hydration; excessive sweating/diarrhea/vomiting can increase risk of low BP and kidney problems.
ACE inhibitors or aliskiren (higher risk of kidney impairment/hyperkalemia; avoid in diabetes with aliskiren), potassium supplements/potassium-sparing diuretics (hyperkalemia risk), NSAIDs (reduced effect and kidney risk), lithium (toxicity risk), other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), diuretics or laxatives (electrolyte imbalance), antidiabetic medicines (may need dose adjustment), corticosteroids (may worsen potassium loss)
