Treatment of hypothyroidism, replacement therapy after thyroidectomy or radioiodine therapy, suppression therapy in certain thyroid cancers/goitre as advised by doctor
Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of thyroid hormone (T4). It is converted in the body to T3, which regulates metabolism, energy, heart rate and growth, thereby correcting low thyroid hormone levels.
Take orally once daily as prescribed, preferably in the morning on an empty stomach 30–60 minutes before breakfast with water. Avoid taking with calcium/iron/antacids within 4 hours; take consistently at the same time each day and follow TSH monitoring.
Palpitations,fast heartbeat,tremor,nervousness,headache,insomnia,increased appetite,weight loss,diarrhoea,heat intolerance,sweating
Use only under medical supervision with periodic TSH/T4 monitoring; dose is individualized. Overdose/over-replacement can cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism and may worsen angina, arrhythmias or heart failure; start low in elderly/cardiac patients. Use caution in adrenal insufficiency (treat first), diabetes (may alter glucose control) and osteoporosis risk. Not for weight loss in euthyroid patients.
