Uses & Benefits
Dissolution of cholesterol gallstones (in suitable patients), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC)/biliary cirrhosis, cholestatic liver disorders with impaired bile flow (as prescribed)
How It Works
Ursodeoxycholic acid is a hydrophilic bile acid that reduces cholesterol saturation in bile by decreasing hepatic cholesterol secretion and improving bile flow. It helps dissolve cholesterol gallstones over time and protects liver cells from bile-acid–induced injury in cholestatic conditions.
Directions for Use
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually with food or after meals to improve tolerance. Swallow whole with water; take regularly at the same time each day. Duration may be several months for gallstone dissolution; do not stop without medical advice.
Side Effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, constipation, headache, dizziness, back pain, rash/itching, transient rise in liver enzymes
Warnings & Precautions
Use only under medical supervision. Not suitable for calcified (radio-opaque) gallstones, non-functioning gallbladder, acute gallbladder/bile duct inflammation, or biliary obstruction unless advised by a specialist. Monitor liver function tests during therapy. Use with caution in severe liver disease, pancreatitis, or persistent diarrhoea. Seek care for severe abdominal pain, jaundice worsening, or allergic reactions.
