Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); helps reduce risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy; may be used in diabetic kidney disease (type 2 diabetes with proteinuria) as advised by doctor.
How It Works
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It blocks angiotensin II (AT1) receptors, causing blood vessels to relax and reducing aldosterone effects. This lowers blood pressure and decreases strain on the heart and kidneys.
Directions for Use
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily, with or without food, at the same time each day. Do not stop abruptly without medical advice; if a dose is missed, take it when remembered unless it is close to the next dose.
Avoid use in pregnancy (can harm the fetus). Use caution in kidney disease, liver disease, dehydration/low salt intake, or heart failure; monitor blood pressure, kidney function and serum potassium. Risk of hyperkalemia—avoid potassium supplements/salt substitutes unless advised. May cause dizziness—caution while driving. Rarely, angioedema can occur; seek urgent care if swelling of face/lips/throat or breathing difficulty occurs.
Drug Interactions
Potassium supplements/salt substitutes, potassium-sparing diuretics (spironolactone/eplerenone/amiloride), ACE inhibitors or other ARBs, aliskiren (especially in diabetes), NSAIDs (ibuprofen/diclofenac) may reduce effect and worsen kidney function, lithium (increased lithium levels/toxicity), diuretics (additive blood pressure lowering)
Storage Instructions
