Unicontin E 600 Tablet is a prescription medicine containing Theophylline (600mg). It is used for cough, chest congestion and common cold symptoms. It belongs to the group of medicines called Expectorant / mucolytic / bronchodilator.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. The dose and how long you take it depend on what you are being treated for and how you respond. Do not take more, or for longer, than your doctor has advised.
The side effects seen most often with Unicontin E 600 Tablet are nausea, vomiting, stomach upset and drowsiness. Most are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. Tell your doctor if one persists or worries you.
Before you start, tell your doctor about any liver, kidney or heart problem, whether you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every other medicine you take, including supplements and ayurvedic preparations. Some of them can change how Unicontin E 600 Tablet works.
Most side effects of Unicontin E are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:
Stop the medicine and get help at once for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew, crush or break it unless your doctor has told you to. Take it with or after food. Taking it at about the same time each day helps you remember. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.
Theophylline loosens and thins the mucus in your airways so a cough clears it more easily, and eases the tightness that comes with congestion.
See a doctor if a cough lasts more than a week, or comes with fever, breathlessness, chest pain or blood in the sputum. Do not give cough and cold preparations to young children except on a doctor's advice. Do not combine two cough preparations — they frequently contain the same ingredients, and the doses add up. Preparations containing codeine can cause dependence and must be used only for the period your doctor specifies. The safe range for this medicine is narrow. Do not change the dose or the brand yourself, and tell your doctor about any new medicine — many alter its level. Report nausea, vomiting, palpitations, tremor or restlessness; these can be early signs the level is too high. Smoking, and stopping smoking, both change how quickly your body clears this medicine. Tell your doctor either way.
Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.
An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, a racing heart, fits and dangerous heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.
Store below 30°C in the original pack, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
