Uses & Benefits
Type 2 diabetes mellitus—used to improve blood glucose control along with diet and exercise; may be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medicines as prescribed.
How It Works
Vildagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor that increases levels of incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP). This enhances glucose-dependent insulin release and reduces glucagon secretion, lowering blood sugar with a low risk of hypoglycaemia when used alone.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth as prescribed, usually once daily for SR formulation. Can be taken with or without food; swallow whole (do not crush/chew). Take at the same time each day and continue diet/exercise plan.
Side Effects
Headache, dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, upper respiratory tract infection, nasopharyngitis, peripheral oedema, increased liver enzymes
Warnings & Precautions
Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Use with caution in liver disease—baseline and periodic LFTs may be advised; stop and seek medical help if jaundice, dark urine or persistent nausea occurs. Caution in renal impairment (dose adjustment may be required) and elderly. Rare risk of pancreatitis—seek urgent care for severe persistent abdominal pain. Severe joint pain and hypersensitivity reactions (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty) can occur; discontinue and consult doctor. Monitor blood glucose; hypoglycaemia risk increases when combined with sulfonylureas/insulin.
Drug Interactions
Insulin, sulfonylureas (increased hypoglycaemia risk), ACE inhibitors (may increase angioedema risk), corticosteroids and thiazide/loop diuretics (may raise blood glucose), beta-blockers (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms).
