Monograph
Tablet
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (as an add-on to diet and exercise), especially for control of post‑meal (postprandial) blood glucose; may be used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines as prescribed.
Voglibose is an alpha‑glucosidase inhibitor that slows down the breakdown and absorption of carbohydrates in the intestine. This reduces the rise in blood sugar levels after meals and improves overall glycaemic control.
Oral tablet. Usually taken just before meals (or with the first bite of food) as prescribed by the doctor. Do not skip meals after taking it; follow diet and exercise advice. If taken with other antidiabetics, monitor blood glucose regularly.
Flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, bloating, nausea
Use with caution in kidney or liver disease; monitor liver enzymes if advised. Not recommended in inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction, malabsorption syndromes, or severe digestive disorders. Risk of hypoglycaemia increases when used with insulin or sulfonylureas—carry glucose; treat low sugar with glucose (not sucrose) as carbohydrate absorption is delayed. Seek medical help for severe abdominal symptoms or allergic reactions.
Insulin, sulfonylureas (e.g., glimepiride, gliclazide), metformin (additive glucose lowering), other alpha‑glucosidase inhibitors, intestinal adsorbents/digestive enzyme preparations (may reduce effect)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct light. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.
