Monograph
Syrup
Symptomatic relief of dry (non-productive) cough associated with common cold/allergy, runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion and throat irritation.
Dextromethorphan suppresses the cough reflex by acting on the cough center in the brain. Phenylephrine is a nasal decongestant that constricts swollen nasal blood vessels to relieve blockage. Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine that reduces sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes.
Oral syrup; take as prescribed by a doctor. Measure with a dosing cup/spoon; usually taken 2–3 times daily. Can be taken with or without food; take after food if stomach upset occurs. Do not exceed recommended dose and avoid use for more than a few days unless advised.
Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, constipation, blurred vision, headache, restlessness, palpitations
May cause marked drowsiness—avoid driving or operating machinery. Do not use with/within 14 days of MAO inhibitors. Use with caution in hypertension, heart disease, thyroid disorder, diabetes, glaucoma, enlarged prostate/urinary retention, liver disease, asthma/COPD. Not recommended in children unless prescribed; overdose can be serious. Seek medical advice if cough persists >7 days, is accompanied by fever/rash, or if breathing difficulty occurs.
MAO inhibitors (serious reactions), SSRIs/SNRIs/TCAs/linezolid/triptans (risk of serotonin syndrome with dextromethorphan), other sedatives/CNS depressants (increased drowsiness), antihypertensives (reduced effect), other decongestants/sympathomimetics (increased BP/heart rate), anticholinergics (increased dryness/urinary retention)
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep bottle tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.
