Indian pharmacies stock both of these as 'probiotics' and treat them as interchangeable, which hides the one fact that actually decides between them: Econorm is a yeast and Darolac is bacteria. That is not a technicality. It determines whether a concurrent antibiotic destroys the product you just paid for, and it determines who should not take it at all.

Our verdict
These are different organisms doing overlapping jobs. Econorm is Saccharomyces boulardii, a probiotic yeast — which is why it is the one commonly chosen alongside antibiotics: a yeast is not killed by them. Darolac is a multi-strain bacterial blend, the more general-purpose gut probiotic. For antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, S. boulardii has the stronger evidence base. For everyday gut support after a stomach upset, either is reasonable. One hard rule sits underneath both: probiotics are supportive, and any diarrhoea in a child still needs ORS first.

Where it loses: Being bacterial, it is vulnerable to a concurrent antibiotic — space the doses by at least two hours or the course largely cancels it. The Darolac name covers several variants with different strain mixes, so the plain one and the Z or Plus versions are not the same product.

Saccharomyces boulardii — the yeast that survives antibiotics
Where it loses: S. boulardii should be avoided in people who are significantly immunocompromised or have a central venous catheter — there are reported cases of fungaemia in exactly those groups. This is a real contraindication, not a label formality, and it is the main reason to ask before self-starting it in a hospitalised or seriously unwell person.
