Depression, neuropathic (nerve) pain, prevention of migraine/tension-type headache (as prescribed), anxiety with depression, chronic pain conditions
Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant that increases levels of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain by inhibiting their reuptake, improving mood. It also modulates pain pathways, which helps reduce neuropathic pain and can prevent certain headaches.
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Often started at low dose (e.g., 10 mg) and usually taken at night due to drowsiness; may be taken with or without food. Swallow with water; do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
