Composition of Ano-Metrogyl Cream

Ano-Metrogyl Cream contains Lidocaine (4% w/w) + Metronidazole (1% w/w) + Sucralfate (7% w/w). It belongs to the Nitroimidazole antibiotic + Amide local anesthetic class of medicines.

How Ano-Metrogyl Cream works

Metronidazole is an antibacterial/antiprotozoal that inhibits DNA synthesis in susceptible anaerobic bacteria, reducing local infection and inflammation. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that blocks nerve sodium channels to numb the area and provide rapid pain relief.

How to take Ano-Metrogyl Cream

For external use only. Clean and dry the affected anal area; apply a thin layer as advised by a doctor (commonly 2–3 times daily). Wash hands before and after application; avoid contact with eyes/mouth and do not apply on large open wounds unless prescribed.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of ANO-metrogyl Cream, use it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine is unlikely from external use. It can cause vomiting, severe loose motions and nerve symptoms. It may cause bloating and loose motions. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Ano-Metrogyl are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Interactions with other medicines

With excessive use/absorption: warfarin and other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk with metronidazole), disulfiram (neuropsychiatric reactions), alcohol (disulfiram-like reaction), other local anesthetics/antiarrhythmics (additive lidocaine effects)

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep tube tightly closed and out of reach of children.

In addition to using ANO-metrogyl Cream, you may take warm sitz baths, which can help soothe the area and ease pain. Do not ignore the urge to defecate. Delaying bowel movements can lead to the formation of harder, larger stools that are more difficult and painful to pass. Avoid taking any oral laxatives along with ANO-metrogyl Cream unless advised by your doctor. Some medicines, such as iron supplements or certain antibiotics, can make stools harder to pass. Inform your doctor if you are taking any of these. A fiber-rich diet (including wholegrain bread, cereals, fruits, and green leafy vegetables), adequate hydration with six to eight glasses of water daily, and regular physical activity are essential for maintaining healthy bowel movements and preventing constipation.
