Baycip 500 mg contains Ciprofloxacin (500mg). It belongs to the Fluoroquinolone antibiotic class of medicines.

Uses of Baycip 500 mg

How Baycip 500 mg works

Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. This blocks DNA replication and repair, leading to bacterial cell death.

How to take Baycip 500 mg

Tablet (oral). Take exactly as prescribed, usually twice daily at fixed times. Can be taken with or without food, but avoid taking with milk/dairy products or calcium-fortified juices alone. Take with plenty of water; complete the full course. Keep a 2–6 hour gap from antacids or supplements containing aluminium/magnesium, iron, zinc, or calcium.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Baycip 500mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause kidney injury, fits and heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Baycip 500 mg

Most side effects of Baycip are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• photosensitivity

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Prescription-only antibiotic. Do not use for viral infections. Risk of tendonitis/tendon rupture (higher in elderly, steroid users); stop and seek care if tendon pain/swelling occurs. May cause peripheral neuropathy, CNS effects (seizures, confusion), or worsening of myasthenia gravis—use caution. Can cause QT prolongation/arrhythmias in susceptible patients. Use caution in kidney disease (dose adjustment may be needed). Stop and seek medical help for severe diarrhoea (possible C. difficile), allergic reactions, or severe skin reactions. Avoid excessive sun/UV exposure; may cause photosensitivity.

Do not take Baycip if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Generally avoided in children and adolescents, in pregnancy, and in anyone with a history of tendon problems with these antibiotics.

Interactions with other medicines

Antacids containing aluminium/magnesium, sucralfate, iron/zinc/calcium supplements (reduced absorption), dairy/calcium-fortified products (reduced absorption if taken alone), warfarin (increased bleeding risk), theophylline (increased levels/toxicity), tizanidine (contraindicated—marked hypotension/sedation), antiarrhythmics/QT-prolonging drugs (increased QT risk), corticosteroids (increased tendon rupture risk), NSAIDs (may increase seizure risk), probenecid (increases ciprofloxacin levels)

How to store Baycip 500 mg

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.

Your doctor has prescribed Baycip 500mg Tablet to cure your infection and improve symptoms. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Discontinue Baycip 500mg Tablet and inform your doctor immediately if you get a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or have difficulty in breathing. Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop when your course is complete. Inform your doctor if it doesn't stop or if you find blood in your stools. Notify your doctor if you feel pain in your tendons, numbness, or tingling sensations. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to conceive or breastfeeding.
