Compound Benzoin Tincture (contains benzoin resin + storax/balsam of tolu + aloes + angelica in alcohol; exact proportions vary by pharmacopoeia/brand)
Topical protectant for minor cuts, cracks and skin irritation; used as an adhesive adjunct to improve adherence of dressings/tapes; sometimes used for inhalation/steam for symptomatic relief in upper respiratory congestion (as directed).
Resins form a protective film over skin and have mild antiseptic and astringent properties. The film can also increase tackiness, helping dressings adhere better and protecting irritated skin from moisture.
For external use: apply a small amount to clean, dry skin using cotton/gauze; allow to dry before applying dressing/tape. Avoid applying on large open wounds or mucosa unless directed. If used for inhalation, follow physician/pharmacist directions carefully and avoid direct contact with face/eyes.
Common side effects of Compound Benzoin Tr may include:
Highly flammable due to alcohol base; keep away from heat/flame. Avoid eyes, mouth and broken skin; do not use on large areas. Stop use and seek advice if rash, swelling or severe irritation occurs. Not recommended in infants for inhalation due to risk of airway irritation.
