Divalproex sodium 250 mg (extended-release/OD) tablet
Treatment of epilepsy/seizure disorders, acute manic episodes in bipolar disorder, prevention of migraine headaches (prophylaxis)
Divalproex sodium dissociates to valproate in the body. Valproate increases brain GABA activity and modulates sodium and calcium channels, stabilizing neuronal firing and reducing abnormal electrical activity.
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually once daily (OD). Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, chew or split (extended-release). Can be taken with food to reduce stomach upset; take at the same time each day.
Common side effects of DIVALVIS OD 250 TAB may include:
Prescription medicine. Risk of serious liver injury (especially in the first 6 months), pancreatitis, and hyperammonemic encephalopathy—seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, jaundice, confusion, or unusual lethargy. Can cause thrombocytopenia/bleeding; periodic liver function tests and blood counts may be needed. May cause sedation—avoid driving if affected. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice (risk of seizures). Not recommended in pregnancy due to high risk of major birth defects and impaired neurodevelopment; effective contraception is advised for women of childbearing potential. Use caution in liver disease, urea cycle disorders, and mitochondrial disorders (e.g., POLG mutations).
