Composition of Eptoin 50 Tablet

Eptoin 50 Tablet contains Phenytoin (50mg). It belongs to the Hydantoin anticonvulsant (Sodium channel blocker) class of medicines.

How Eptoin 50 Tablet works

Phenytoin stabilizes neuronal membranes by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels. This limits seizure spread and reduces abnormal firing in the brain.

How to take Eptoin 50 Tablet

Take as prescribed at the same time daily, with or without food. Do not stop suddenly. Dose is individualized; blood level monitoring may be required, especially with dose changes or interacting medicines.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of EPToin 50 Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause deep unconsciousness, slowed breathing and dangerous heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Eptoin 50 Tablet

Most side effects of Eptoin are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• drowsiness
• nausea
• unsteady gait
• nystagmus
• gum swelling
• rash
• headache

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Risk of severe skin rash (SJS/TEN) and hypersensitivity; seek urgent care for rash, fever, mouth sores. Maintain good dental hygiene to reduce gum overgrowth. Many drug interactions; may reduce effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. Use caution in liver disease and in elderly; avoid abrupt withdrawal.

Do not take Eptoin if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Valproate-containing medicines are contraindicated in pregnancy for epilepsy unless no alternative exists, and in all women of childbearing potential without a pregnancy prevention programme. Several are not suitable in significant liver disease.

Take your medication regularly as directed by your doctor as missing doses can trigger seizures. Do not change the brand of your medicine and make sure that you have sufficient amount of medicine present with you. Some healthy tips to prevent seizures: Practice yoga every day. Get enough sleep at nighttime. Limit the use of screen time such as mobile/laptop. Take your medication on time. It may cause dizziness and sleepiness. Do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how it affects you. It may increase blood sugar levels. Inform your doctor if you are taking any medicines to treat diabetes. It may cause swollen gum (gum hypertrophy), hence take care of oral or dental hygiene. Talk to your doctor if you notice sudden mood changes or develop suicidal thoughts. Do not stop taking the medication suddenly without talking to your doctor as it may increase the seizure frequency.
