Gardenal 60 Tablet contains Phenobarbitone (Phenobarbital) 60 mg. It belongs to the Barbiturate anticonvulsant class of medicines.

How Gardenal 60 Tablet works

Phenobarbitone enhances inhibitory GABA activity and suppresses excessive neuronal firing in the CNS. This increases seizure threshold and reduces seizure propagation.

How to take Gardenal 60 Tablet

Take exactly as prescribed, often once daily at night or in divided doses. Do not discontinue abruptly; dose should be tapered under medical supervision. Avoid driving if sleepy.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause deep unconsciousness, slowed breathing and dangerous heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Gardenal are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

May cause dependence; do not misuse. Sudden stopping may cause withdrawal and seizures. Risk of severe skin reactions; seek medical attention for rash/blistering. Caution in liver impairment, breathing disorders, porphyria, elderly and debilitated patients. May reduce effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives.

Do not take Gardenal if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Valproate-containing medicines are contraindicated in pregnancy for epilepsy unless no alternative exists, and in all women of childbearing potential without a pregnancy prevention programme. Several are not suitable in significant liver disease.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids and other sedatives, oral contraceptives, warfarin, corticosteroids, doxycycline, antiretrovirals, azole antifungals, valproate, phenytoin/carbamazepine

Store below 25°C, protect from moisture and light, keep container tightly closed.
