Take it on an empty stomach, about half an hour to an hour before your first meal — this is when the acid pumps are most active and the medicine works best. Long-term use has been linked to low magnesium and low vitamin B12, and to a higher risk of bone fracture. Review the need with your doctor rather than continuing indefinitely. Tell your doctor if acidity comes with difficulty swallowing, vomiting, weight loss, or black stools — these need investigation, not a longer course. Do not stop a long course abruptly; acid can rebound. Your doctor will taper it. Finish the whole course even after you feel better. Do not drink any alcohol while taking metronidazole, ornidazole or tinidazole, or for the period after the course that your doctor states — the combination causes severe flushing, vomiting and a racing heart. Report severe or watery loose motions during or after the course rather than treating them yourself. Tetracyclines stain developing teeth and are avoided in young children and in pregnancy. Stop and seek emergency care for swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash — a penicillin allergy can be serious. Tell your doctor if loose motions become severe or watery, or continue after the course — this needs attention rather than an anti-diarrhoeal.

Interactions with other medicines

Reduces the absorption of some antifungals, iron and certain HIV medicines. Tell your doctor if you take clopidogrel, methotrexate or a blood thinner. Antacids, iron, zinc and calcium reduce the absorption of tetracyclines — separate them by a couple of hours. Tell your doctor if you take a blood thinner. May reduce the reliability of the oral contraceptive pill if you have vomiting or loose motions — use additional precautions during the course. Tell your doctor if you take methotrexate or a blood thinner.
