How Omnacortil 40 mg works

How to take Omnacortil 40 mg

Take by mouth as directed by the doctor, preferably in the morning after food. Swallow whole with water. Dose and duration vary by condition; do not stop suddenly—tapering is usually required after prolonged use.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Omnacortil 40 Tablet DT, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause weight gain, high blood sugar, bone thinning and suppression of the body's own steroid production when it is taken over a prolonged period. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Omnacortil are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

Prescription-only steroid. Do not stop abruptly after long use (risk of adrenal suppression). Use with caution in diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, peptic ulcer disease, glaucoma/cataract, liver disease, tuberculosis or other infections. Can mask signs of infection; avoid exposure to chickenpox/measles. Long-term use may cause Cushingoid features, bone loss, muscle weakness and growth suppression in children. Vaccines: avoid live vaccines during high-dose therapy.

Do not take Omnacortil if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with an untreated systemic infection, except where the steroid is part of the treatment.

Interactions with other medicines

NSAIDs (increased GI bleed/ulcer risk), anticoagulants like warfarin (INR changes), antidiabetics/insulin (may need dose adjustment), diuretics/amphotericin B (hypokalemia), rifampicin/phenytoin/carbamazepine (reduced steroid effect), ketoconazole/ritonavir (increased steroid levels), cyclosporine (increased levels/toxicity), vaccines (reduced response; avoid live vaccines)
