Systane Ultra contains Polyethylene Glycol 400 0.4% w/v + Propylene Glycol 0.3% w/v (lubricant eye drops). It belongs to the Ocular lubricants (demulcents) class of medicines.

How Systane Ultra works

Polyethylene glycol 400 and propylene glycol act as ocular lubricants that supplement the tear film and reduce friction on the ocular surface. They help stabilize the tear layer, soothe irritation and provide longer-lasting comfort in dry eye.

How to take Systane Ultra

For ophthalmic use only. Instill 1–2 drops in the affected eye(s) as needed or as directed by a doctor. If using with other eye medicines, keep a gap of at least 5–10 minutes. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface; recap tightly after use.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe loose motions, dehydration and salt imbalance. It is not a realistic risk from a moisturiser used on the skin. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Systane Ultra

Most side effects of Systane Ultra are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

For external use in the eyes only. Remove contact lenses before instillation if advised; reinsert after 15 minutes (or as per label/doctor). Stop use and consult a doctor if eye pain, vision changes, persistent redness/irritation, or symptoms worsen or persist. Do not use if seal is broken or solution changes color/turns cloudy. Avoid contamination—do not touch dropper tip. Use caution while driving immediately after use due to temporary blurring.

Do not take Systane Ultra if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for anyone with a suspected bowel obstruction, or with severe abdominal pain of unknown cause.

Interactions with other medicines

No clinically significant drug interactions known with topical ocular lubricants; separate from other eye drops by 5–10 minutes to avoid washout/dilution.

How to store Systane Ultra

Store at room temperature (generally below 25–30°C), protected from light and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed. Do not freeze. Discard as per pack instructions after opening.

Increase fibre, fluids and physical activity — these treat the cause rather than the episode. Do not ignore the urge to go; a regular routine helps. Use lukewarm water, a soap substitute and short baths. Smooth it on in the direction the hair grows rather than rubbing it in hard. Keep using it when the skin looks normal — that is what prevents the next flare.
