Metformin hydrochloride 500 mg (sustained release)
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (to control blood glucose)
Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and decreases intestinal glucose absorption. It also improves insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, helping lower blood sugar without usually causing hypoglycaemia when used alone.
Take by mouth as directed by doctor, usually once daily with the evening meal or with food. Swallow the sustained-release tablet whole; do not crush, break or chew. Regularly monitor blood glucose; continue diet and exercise advice.
Common side effects of UFORMIN-500 SR TAB may include:
Risk of lactic acidosis (rare but serious), especially with kidney impairment, dehydration, severe infection, shock, liver disease, or excessive alcohol use. Dose adjustment/avoid in reduced renal function; monitor eGFR periodically. Temporarily stop before/after iodinated contrast procedures and during major surgery as advised. Long-term use may cause vitamin B12 deficiency; consider periodic monitoring. Use caution in elderly and in conditions causing poor oxygenation.
