Treatment of erectile dysfunction (inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual activity) in adult men
Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It increases cGMP levels in the penis during sexual stimulation, leading to relaxation of smooth muscle and increased blood flow to help achieve and maintain an erection.
Oral tablet. Take 1 tablet about 30–60 minutes before sexual activity; works only with sexual stimulation. Do not take more than once in 24 hours. Can be taken with or without food, but a heavy/fatty meal may delay onset.

Prescription-only medicine. Do not use with nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin/isosorbide) or riociguat due to risk of severe hypotension. Use with caution in heart disease, recent heart attack/stroke, low blood pressure, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe liver/kidney disease, retinitis pigmentosa, bleeding disorders, peptic ulcer, penile deformity, or conditions predisposing to priapism (e.g., sickle cell anemia). Seek urgent care for chest pain, sudden vision loss, sudden hearing loss, or erection lasting >4 hours (priapism).
