Zimigut 200 mg Tablet contains Rifaximin (200mg). It belongs to the Rifamycin antibiotic (gut-selective) class of medicines.

Treatment of intestinal bacterial infections such as acute infectious diarrhoea (including traveller’s diarrhoea) caused by susceptible bacteria; may be used for other gut bacterial overgrowth conditions as prescribed.

How Zimigut 200 mg Tablet works

Rifaximin is a minimally absorbed antibiotic that acts locally in the intestine. It inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis by binding to the beta-subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, reducing the growth of susceptible gut bacteria.

How to take Zimigut 200 mg Tablet

Take the tablet by mouth with water, with or without food, exactly as prescribed. Complete the full course even if you feel better; do not self-treat persistent diarrhoea beyond 48 hours without medical advice.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Zimigut 200 Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, severe loose motions and nerve symptoms. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Zimigut 200 mg Tablet

Most side effects of Zimigut are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Nausea
• abdominal pain
• flatulence
• constipation
• headache
• dizziness

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Do not use if allergic to rifaximin/rifamycins. Seek medical help if diarrhoea is severe, persistent, or accompanied by fever or blood in stools. Use with caution in severe liver disease; risk of adverse effects may be higher. Prolonged use may lead to superinfection including C. difficile–associated diarrhoea. Not recommended for children unless prescribed.

Do not take Zimigut if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack.

Interactions with other medicines

Warfarin (INR changes), cyclosporine (may increase rifaximin exposure), other anticoagulants/antiplatelets (monitor bleeding risk if INR changes), P-glycoprotein inhibitors (may increase levels)

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Zimigut 200 mg Tablet

You have been prescribed Zimigut 200 Tablet for the treatment of infectious diarrhea. It should only be taken for a maximum of three days. If your symptoms do not improve after three days, inform your doctor. Do not take a second course of Zimigut 200 Tablet. It may cause reddish discoloration of urine. This is normal and harmless. Stop taking Zimigut 200 Tablet and inform your doctor if your diarrhoea gets worse or starts to contain blood or mucus. Finish the full course of the medication, even if you feel better. Stopping the course early increases the risk of coming back of the infection.
