Composition of Zymar

Zymar contains Gatifloxacin 0.3% w/v ophthalmic solution. It belongs to the Fluoroquinolone antibiotic class of medicines.

How Zymar works

Gatifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, blocking DNA replication and leading to bacterial cell death.

How to take Zymar

For ophthalmic use only. Instill the prescribed number of drops into the affected eye(s) as advised by the doctor. Wash hands before use, avoid touching the dropper tip, and keep the eye closed for 1–2 minutes after instillation; if using other eye medicines, keep a 5–10 minute gap.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause kidney injury, fits and heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Zymar

Most side effects of Zymar are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• watery eyes
• blurred vision
• foreign body sensation
• eye discomfort
• bitter taste

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Not for injection or oral use. Avoid contact of dropper tip with eye/skin to prevent contamination. Remove contact lenses before use; generally avoid wearing lenses during active infection. Stop and seek medical advice if allergic reaction, severe pain, swelling, rash, or worsening symptoms occur. Use with caution in children, pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.

Do not take Zymar if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Generally avoided in children and adolescents, in pregnancy, and in anyone with a history of tendon problems with these antibiotics.

Interactions with other medicines

No significant systemic drug interactions expected with ophthalmic use; avoid simultaneous instillation with other eye drops without spacing (5–10 minutes).

How to store Zymar

Store below 25°C, protect from light, keep bottle tightly closed. Do not freeze. Discard as per label/doctor advice after opening (commonly within 4 weeks).

Drink plenty of water through the course. Separate it from antacids, milk and mineral supplements.
