Bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, tonsillitis, otitis media, bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, dental infections, bone and joint infections caused by susceptible organisms
Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from degradation by beta-lactamase–producing bacteria, thereby extending its spectrum.
Take as prescribed by a doctor. Usually taken orally with food to reduce stomach upset; swallow with water at evenly spaced intervals. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve; do not skip doses.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, skin rash, oral/vaginal candidiasis
Use only for bacterial infections. Inform doctor if you have allergy to penicillins/cephalosporins, history of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction with amoxicillin-clavulanate, severe kidney or liver disease, infectious mononucleosis (risk of rash). Monitor for severe diarrhoea (C. difficile), allergic reactions (hives, swelling, breathing difficulty) and stop/seek care if they occur. Dose adjustment may be needed in renal impairment. May reduce effectiveness of oral contraceptives—use additional contraception if advised.
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk/INR), methotrexate (increased toxicity), allopurinol (increased rash risk), probenecid (increases amoxicillin levels), mycophenolate mofetil (reduced active metabolite levels), oral contraceptives (possible reduced efficacy)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
