Monograph
Clavulanic Acid (125mg) + Amoxycillin (250mg)
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, otitis media, bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, dental infections, and certain bone/joint infections.
Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from enzymatic breakdown by resistant bacteria, broadening its activity.
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually with food at the start of a meal to reduce stomach upset. Swallow with water and complete the full course; doses are typically spaced evenly (e.g., every 8 hours for 375 mg) as directed by a doctor.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, skin rash, oral/vaginal candidiasis
Do not use if allergic to penicillins/cephalosporins or with history of severe hypersensitivity. Stop and seek care for rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, or severe diarrhea (possible C. difficile). Use with caution in liver disease; monitor liver function if prolonged use. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney impairment. May cause false-positive urine glucose tests. Not effective for viral infections.
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk/INR changes), methotrexate (increased toxicity), allopurinol (increased risk of rash), probenecid (increases amoxicillin levels), mycophenolate mofetil (reduced active metabolite exposure), oral contraceptives (possible reduced efficacy—use backup if advised)
