Used to treat high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia) and to reduce risk of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in high-risk patients.
Atorvastatin is an HMG‑CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that reduces cholesterol synthesis in the liver. It lowers LDL and triglycerides and modestly increases HDL, helping reduce atherosclerotic plaque formation and cardiovascular risk.
Take orally as directed by a doctor, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Continue diet and lifestyle measures; do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, stomach pain, constipation, nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, muscle pain, weakness, increased liver enzymes
Prescription medicine. Avoid use in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes. Seek medical help for unexplained muscle pain/tenderness/weakness, especially with fever or dark urine (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis). Use caution in alcohol use, liver problems, hypothyroidism, kidney impairment, and in elderly. Periodic lipid profile and liver function monitoring may be advised.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, protease inhibitors), cyclosporine, gemfibrozil/other fibrates, niacin, ezetimibe (increased myopathy risk), warfarin (may affect INR), colchicine, digoxin (possible level increase), grapefruit juice (may increase atorvastatin levels)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
