High cholesterol (hyperlipidaemia), mixed dyslipidaemia, prevention of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in high-risk patients

Atorvastatin is a statin that inhibits HMG‑CoA reductase, reducing cholesterol production in the liver. It lowers LDL and triglycerides and can modestly raise HDL, helping reduce plaque buildup and cardiovascular risk.

Tablet; take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Continue diet and exercise advice; do not stop without medical advice.

Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, muscle pain, weakness, elevated liver enzymes

Avoid use in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes. Seek medical help for unexplained muscle pain/weakness especially with fever or dark urine (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis). Use caution in alcohol use, hypothyroidism, kidney impairment, elderly, and with history of muscle disorders. Periodic liver function tests may be advised.

Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, HIV protease inhibitors), cyclosporine, gemfibrozil/other fibrates, niacin, colchicine, amiodarone, verapamil/diltiazem, warfarin (monitor INR), grapefruit juice (large amounts)

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
