Tablet
Management of high cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia, mixed dyslipidaemia); reduction of risk of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in at-risk patients along with diet and lifestyle changes
Atorvastatin is an HMG‑CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that reduces cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and can modestly increase HDL, thereby reducing atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Continue diet and exercise measures; do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, indigestion, muscle pain (myalgia), joint pain, fatigue, increased liver enzymes
Not recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use with caution in liver disease, heavy alcohol use, hypothyroidism, kidney impairment, and in elderly due to higher risk of muscle-related side effects. Seek medical help for unexplained muscle pain/weakness, fever, or dark urine (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis). Periodic lipid profile and liver function tests may be advised.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, HIV protease inhibitors), cyclosporine, gemfibrozil/other fibrates, niacin, colchicine (increased myopathy risk), warfarin (monitor INR), digoxin (may increase levels), grapefruit juice (may increase atorvastatin levels)
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
