Uses & Benefits
Management of diabetes mellitus to improve glycaemic control in adults and children where basal (long-acting) insulin is required; Type 1 diabetes (with short/rapid-acting insulin) and Type 2 diabetes (alone or with oral antidiabetics/other insulin).
How It Works
Insulin glargine is a long-acting basal insulin analogue. After subcutaneous injection it forms microprecipitates that slowly release insulin, providing a relatively constant glucose-lowering effect over ~24 hours by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and reducing hepatic glucose production.
Directions for Use
For subcutaneous use only. Inject once daily at the same time each day into abdomen, thigh or upper arm; rotate injection sites. Use as prescribed based on blood glucose; do not dilute or mix with other insulins in the same syringe/pen. Check label and appearance before use; never inject intravenously.
Side Effects
Hypoglycaemia, injection site reactions (pain/redness/swelling/itching), weight gain, lipodystrophy at injection site, oedema, rash
Warnings & Precautions
Risk of hypoglycaemia—monitor blood glucose, especially when changing dose, meal pattern, activity or other medicines. Do not use during episodes of hypoglycaemia. Use caution in renal/hepatic impairment, elderly, and those with hypoglycaemia unawareness. Rotate injection sites to reduce lipodystrophy. Do not share pens/needles to prevent infection transmission. Seek urgent care for severe hypoglycaemia, allergic reactions, or signs of infection.

Drug Interactions
Other antidiabetics (sulfonylureas, glinides) and alcohol may increase hypoglycaemia risk; beta-blockers can mask hypoglycaemia symptoms; corticosteroids, thiazide/loop diuretics, thyroid hormones, sympathomimetics and atypical antipsychotics may increase blood glucose; ACE inhibitors/ARBs and salicylates may enhance glucose-lowering; MAO inhibitors may increase hypoglycaemia risk.
Storage Instructions
Store unopened in a refrigerator at 2–8°C; do not freeze and keep away from freezer compartment. Protect from light. After first use, keep as per pack instructions (often at room temperature below 25–30°C) and use within the in-use period; do not refrigerate if label advises; keep cap on and avoid heat/sunlight.
