Uses & Benefits
Treatment of diabetes mellitus (type 1 and type 2) to control high blood sugar; management of hyperglycaemia in hospital settings as advised by a doctor
How It Works
Regular human insulin replaces/supplements natural insulin to help glucose enter muscle and fat cells and reduce glucose production by the liver. This lowers blood sugar levels and helps prevent acute and long-term complications of diabetes.
Directions for Use
Injection (vial) for subcutaneous use; may also be used IV only under medical supervision. Typically taken about 30 minutes before meals as prescribed. Use the dose and schedule advised by your doctor; rotate injection sites; do not share needles/syringes; monitor blood glucose regularly.
Side Effects
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), injection site reactions (pain, redness, swelling), weight gain, lipodystrophy at injection site, oedema, allergic reactions (rare)
Warnings & Precautions
Risk of hypoglycaemia—carry a quick source of glucose and learn symptoms (sweating, tremor, confusion). Dose needs may change with illness, stress, change in diet/exercise, kidney or liver impairment. Do not use if allergic to insulin or during episodes of hypoglycaemia. Use caution when driving/operating machinery. Rotate sites to reduce lipodystrophy; seek urgent care for severe allergy or severe hypoglycaemia.
Drug Interactions
Other antidiabetics (additive hypoglycaemia), beta-blockers (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), ACE inhibitors, salicylates, MAO inhibitors (increase insulin effect), corticosteroids, thiazide/loop diuretics, thyroid hormones, sympathomimetics (reduce insulin effect), alcohol (can cause hypoglycaemia), quinolones (may alter glucose), atypical antipsychotics (may raise glucose)
