Treatment of fungal infections such as candidiasis (oral/throat, vaginal, systemic), cryptococcal infections (including meningitis), and prevention of fungal infections in immunocompromised patients (as prescribed).
Fluconazole is a triazole antifungal that inhibits fungal cytochrome P450 (14‑alpha‑demethylase), reducing ergosterol synthesis. This damages the fungal cell membrane and stops fungal growth.
Take the capsule by mouth exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Swallow whole with water; take at the same time each day. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve.
Nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, rash, taste changes, increased liver enzymes
Use with caution in liver disease (risk of hepatitis/raised liver enzymes) and in kidney impairment (dose adjustment may be needed). Seek medical help for severe rash/skin peeling, jaundice, dark urine, persistent vomiting, or signs of allergy. May cause QT prolongation/arrhythmias—caution in patients with heart rhythm disorders or low potassium/magnesium. Not effective for all fungal infections; avoid self-medication.
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk), phenytoin, carbamazepine, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, sulfonylureas (hypoglycaemia), rifampicin (reduced fluconazole levels), zidovudine, theophylline, statins (myopathy risk), benzodiazepines (e.g., midazolam), QT‑prolonging medicines (e.g., amiodarone, certain antipsychotics/macrolides).
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
