Tablet
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and early Lyme disease (where appropriate).
Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed by the doctor, usually after food to improve absorption. Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew. Complete the full course even if you feel better.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, rash, vaginal yeast infection, taste disturbance
Prescription-only antibiotic; use only for bacterial infections. Do not use if allergic to cefuroxime/cephalosporins; use caution with history of severe penicillin allergy. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney disease. Prolonged use may cause superinfection (e.g., fungal infection) or antibiotic-associated diarrhoea/C. difficile; seek medical help for severe/persistent diarrhoea. May affect some lab tests (e.g., Coombs test).
Probenecid (increases cefuroxime levels), antacids/H2 blockers/PPIs (may reduce absorption), oral anticoagulants like warfarin (may increase bleeding risk/INR), oral contraceptives (may reduce effectiveness—use backup), aminoglycosides or loop diuretics (increased risk of kidney effects)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
