Monograph
Tablet
Prevention and treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency; management of megaloblastic anemia due to B12 deficiency; supportive therapy in peripheral neuropathy/neuritis associated with B12 deficiency.
Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin/cyanocobalamin forms) is essential for DNA synthesis and red blood cell formation and helps maintain healthy nerve function. Supplementation corrects deficiency, improves anemia parameters, and supports nerve repair and myelin maintenance.
Take orally as directed by physician. Generally taken once daily after food; swallow tablet whole with water. Do not exceed recommended dose unless advised.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, headache, dizziness, skin rash, itching
Use with caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to vitamin B12/cobalt. In untreated folate deficiency, B12 alone may not correct anemia—evaluate for combined deficiencies. Patients with Leber’s disease (hereditary optic neuropathy) should avoid vitamin B12 unless prescribed. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical advice.
Chloramphenicol (may blunt hematologic response), metformin (may reduce B12 absorption with long-term use), proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers (may reduce B12 absorption), colchicine and neomycin (reduce absorption)
