Monograph
Tablet
Treatment and prevention of vitamin D deficiency, adjunct in osteoporosis/osteopenia, supports calcium absorption and bone health
Cholecalciferol is converted in the body to active vitamin D (calcitriol). It increases intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate and supports bone mineralization, helping correct low vitamin D levels.
Take by mouth as advised by doctor; commonly 1 tablet once daily. Preferably take with/after food (fat-containing meal improves absorption). Do not exceed recommended dose unless prescribed.
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, headache, increased thirst, increased urination
Use with caution in hypercalcemia, hypervitaminosis D, kidney disease/renal stones, sarcoidosis or other granulomatous disorders. Overdose can cause high calcium leading to confusion, weakness, dehydration and kidney problems—seek medical help if suspected. Monitor calcium/vitamin D levels if on high doses or long-term therapy.
Thiazide diuretics (risk of hypercalcemia), digoxin/cardiac glycosides (arrhythmia risk with high calcium), anticonvulsants like phenytoin/phenobarbital and rifampicin (reduced vitamin D effect), corticosteroids (reduced effect), cholestyramine/orlistat (reduced absorption), magnesium-containing antacids (risk of hypermagnesemia in renal impairment)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
