Treatment and prevention of vitamin D deficiency, vitamin D insufficiency, rickets/osteomalacia, adjunct in osteoporosis/osteopenia and fracture healing where vitamin D supplementation is needed
Cholecalciferol is converted in the body to active vitamin D (calcitriol), which increases intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. It helps maintain normal bone mineralization and supports muscle function.
Oral tablet. Take as prescribed by a doctor; commonly 60,000 IU once weekly for 6–8 weeks, then maintenance as advised. Preferably take after food or with milk to improve absorption; swallow with water.
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, headache, weakness, increased thirst, increased urination
Use with caution in hypercalcemia, hypervitaminosis D, kidney stones, severe renal impairment, sarcoidosis or other granulomatous diseases. Avoid exceeding recommended dose; overdose can cause high calcium levels leading to confusion, arrhythmias and kidney damage. Monitor calcium/vitamin D levels if on long-term/high-dose therapy. Keep out of reach of children.
Thiazide diuretics (risk of hypercalcemia), digoxin/other cardiac glycosides (arrhythmia risk with hypercalcemia), antiepileptics like phenytoin/carbamazepine (reduced vitamin D effect), rifampicin (reduced effect), corticosteroids (reduced effect), cholestyramine/orlistat (reduced absorption), magnesium-containing antacids (hypermagnesemia risk in renal impairment)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep the strip tightly closed.
