Bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections (including acne), urinary/genital infections (including chlamydia), eye infections, rickettsial infections; also used for malaria prophylaxis/treatment as per doctor advice
Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby stopping bacterial growth. It is generally bacteriostatic and effective against a broad range of susceptible organisms.
Take exactly as prescribed. Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water; take while sitting/standing and avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes. Preferably take after food if it causes stomach upset; avoid taking with milk/dairy, antacids, iron or calcium supplements within 2 hours of the dose.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, indigestion, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, photosensitivity (sunburn), skin rash, oesophagitis/heartburn, vaginal/oral candidiasis
Not recommended in pregnancy and in children below 8 years due to risk of teeth discoloration and effects on bone growth. Use with caution in liver disease, history of oesophageal irritation/ulcer, and in patients with myasthenia gravis. Can cause severe sun sensitivity—use sunscreen and avoid excessive sunlight. Stop and seek medical help if severe diarrhoea, allergic reaction, or signs of intracranial hypertension (persistent headache/blurred vision) occur.
Antacids containing aluminium/magnesium, calcium supplements, iron/zinc supplements (reduced absorption), warfarin (increased bleeding risk), isotretinoin/retinoids (increased risk of intracranial hypertension), penicillins (may reduce effect), enzyme inducers like phenytoin/carbamazepine/barbiturates (reduced doxycycline levels), oral contraceptives (reduced efficacy—use additional contraception)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
