High cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia), mixed dyslipidaemia, prevention of heart attack and stroke in at-risk patients
Atorvastatin is a statin that inhibits HMG‑CoA reductase, reducing cholesterol production in the liver. It lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides and can modestly raise HDL, reducing plaque formation and cardiovascular risk.
Oral tablet. Take once daily at the same time each day, with or without food, as prescribed. Continue diet/exercise; do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, muscle pain, joint pain, increased liver enzymes
Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use with caution in liver disease, heavy alcohol use, hypothyroidism, kidney problems, or history of muscle disorders; report unexplained muscle pain/weakness, fever or dark urine (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis). Periodic lipid profile and liver function tests may be needed. Avoid large quantities of grapefruit juice.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, HIV protease inhibitors), cyclosporine, fibrates (especially gemfibrozil), niacin, colchicine, amiodarone, verapamil/diltiazem, warfarin/other anticoagulants, rifampicin, grapefruit juice
Store below 25°C, protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
