Tablet
Used to lower high cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia/mixed dyslipidaemia), reduce LDL and triglycerides, increase HDL, and to reduce risk of heart attack and stroke in high-risk patients.
Atorvastatin is a statin that inhibits HMG‑CoA reductase, an enzyme needed for cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and modestly raises HDL, reducing atherosclerotic plaque progression and cardiovascular risk.
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Follow a cholesterol-lowering diet and exercise plan; do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion, muscle pain, weakness, raised liver enzymes
Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use with caution in liver disease, heavy alcohol use, hypothyroidism, kidney impairment, and in elderly due to higher risk of muscle injury (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis). Seek medical help for unexplained muscle pain/weakness, dark urine, or jaundice; periodic liver function tests and lipid monitoring may be needed. Avoid large quantities of grapefruit juice.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, protease inhibitors), cyclosporine, gemfibrozil and other fibrates, niacin, colchicine, daptomycin (increased myopathy risk), warfarin (may affect INR), digoxin (may increase levels), ezetimibe (additive muscle/liver effects), grapefruit juice (increases atorvastatin levels)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
