High cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia), mixed dyslipidaemia, prevention of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in at-risk patients

Atorvastatin inhibits HMG‑CoA reductase, reducing cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This lowers LDL (“bad” cholesterol) and triglycerides and can modestly raise HDL, reducing plaque formation and cardiovascular risk.

Oral tablet. Take once daily at the same time each day, with or without food, as prescribed. Continue diet/exercise advice; do not stop without medical advice.

Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, muscle pain (myalgia), joint pain, increased liver enzymes

Prescription medicine. Risk of muscle injury (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis)—seek medical help for unexplained muscle pain/weakness, fever or dark urine. Monitor liver function; avoid in active liver disease or persistent elevated transaminases. Not recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use caution in elderly, kidney disease, hypothyroidism, heavy alcohol use, and with history of muscle disorders.

Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, HIV protease inhibitors), cyclosporine, gemfibrozil/fibrates, niacin, colchicine, amiodarone, verapamil/diltiazem, warfarin (monitor INR), digoxin, grapefruit juice (large amounts)

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
