Monograph
Human insulin (recombinant) Injection IP 100 IU/mL (Regular insulin)
Treatment of diabetes mellitus (Type 1 and Type 2) to control high blood glucose; may be used in diabetic ketoacidosis or peri-operative/acute illness settings as advised by doctor
Regular human insulin replaces/supplements natural insulin. It helps glucose enter muscle and fat cells and reduces glucose production by the liver, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.
For subcutaneous injection using compatible insulin pen/cartridge system as prescribed. Usually injected about 30 minutes before meals; dose and timing individualized based on blood glucose. Do not share pens/needles; rotate injection sites (abdomen, thigh, upper arm). Use only if solution is clear and colorless; follow doctor’s instructions for mixing if used with other insulins.
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), injection site reactions (pain/redness/swelling), weight gain, itching/rash, lipodystrophy (thickening or pitting of skin at injection site), edema
Risk of hypoglycaemia—monitor blood glucose and know symptoms (sweating, tremor, hunger, confusion). Dose adjustments may be needed with changes in diet, activity, illness, stress, kidney/liver impairment. Do not use during episodes of hypoglycaemia or if allergic to insulin/excipients. Use caution when driving/operating machinery due to hypoglycaemia risk. Ensure correct insulin type/strength and cartridge compatibility; do not use if frozen, cloudy, or discoloured.
Other antidiabetics, ACE inhibitors/ARBs, salicylates, MAO inhibitors can increase hypoglycaemic effect; corticosteroids, thiazide/loop diuretics, thyroid hormones, oral contraceptives, sympathomimetics can raise blood glucose and reduce insulin effect; beta-blockers may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms; alcohol can increase risk of hypoglycaemia; pioglitazone with insulin may increase risk of fluid retention/heart failure
Store refrigerated at 2–8°C; do not freeze. Keep away from light and heat; keep cartridge in outer carton. If in use, follow pen/cartridge instructions; generally can be kept at room temperature below 25–30°C for a limited period as per pack insert; discard if frozen or after recommended in-use period.
