Monograph
Human insulin (40IU)
Treatment of diabetes mellitus to control high blood sugar (Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes when insulin is required); management of hyperglycaemia in diabetic ketoacidosis and peri-operative/acute illness settings as prescribed.
Regular human insulin replaces or supplements endogenous insulin. It promotes glucose uptake in muscle and fat and reduces glucose production by the liver, thereby lowering blood sugar. It also helps shift potassium into cells.
Injection (40 IU/mL): Use only if your syringe is calibrated for 40 IU/mL insulin. Administer subcutaneously as prescribed, usually 30 minutes before meals; may be used intravenously only under medical supervision. Rotate injection sites; do not share needles/syringes. Check label/appearance before use and monitor blood glucose regularly.
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar),injection site pain/redness/swelling,weight gain,lipodystrophy at injection site,allergic reactions (rash/itching),oedema
Risk of hypoglycaemia—carry glucose/sugar and know symptoms. Dose adjustments may be needed with changes in diet, exercise, illness, stress, kidney/liver disease. Do not use if solution is cloudy/coloured or contains particles (regular insulin should be clear). Use correct U-40 syringe to avoid dosing errors. Caution when driving/operating machinery if prone to hypoglycaemia. Seek urgent care for severe allergy, recurrent severe hypoglycaemia, or signs of low potassium (weakness, cramps, palpitations).
Other antidiabetics (additive hypoglycaemia),beta-blockers (mask hypoglycaemia symptoms),ACE inhibitors (may increase hypoglycaemia risk),corticosteroids (raise blood glucose),thiazide/loop diuretics (raise blood glucose),thyroid hormones (may increase insulin requirement),sympathomimetics like salbutamol (raise blood glucose),MAO inhibitors (increase hypoglycaemia risk),alcohol (can cause hypoglycaemia)
Store refrigerated at 2–8°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep vial in original carton. Once in use, store as per pack insert/doctor advice; avoid excessive heat and discard if frozen or if appearance changes.
