Monograph
Levofloxacin 250 mg (tablet)
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections (acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and other infections as prescribed.
Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. This prevents DNA replication and repair, leading to bacterial cell death.
Oral tablet: take exactly as prescribed by the doctor, usually once daily. Can be taken with or without food; take with a full glass of water. Avoid taking simultaneously with antacids or supplements containing iron, zinc, magnesium or aluminium; keep a 2-hour gap before or 2–6 hours after (as advised). Complete the full course even if you feel better.
nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, insomnia, vomiting, rash
Prescription-only antibiotic; use only for confirmed/suspected bacterial infection. Risk of tendonitis/tendon rupture (higher in elderly, steroid users), peripheral neuropathy, CNS effects (seizures, confusion), QT prolongation/arrhythmias, blood sugar disturbances, and severe allergic reactions. May cause photosensitivity—limit sun exposure. Use with caution in kidney disease (dose adjustment may be needed), history of seizures, myasthenia gravis, and in patients with heart rhythm problems. Stop and seek medical help if tendon pain/swelling, severe diarrhea, numbness/tingling, palpitations, or allergic symptoms occur.
antacids/aluminium/magnesium, iron salts, zinc/calcium supplements, sucralfate (reduced absorption), warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk), antiarrhythmics/QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, macrolides, antipsychotics), corticosteroids (increased tendon rupture risk), NSAIDs (increased seizure risk), antidiabetic medicines/insulin (hypo/hyperglycemia), probenecid/cimetidine (may increase levels)
