Monograph
Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) 650 mg tablet
Relief of fever and mild to moderate pain such as headache, body ache, toothache, sore throat, musculoskeletal pain, and pain associated with common cold/flu
Paracetamol inhibits prostaglandin synthesis primarily in the central nervous system, which reduces pain perception and lowers fever by acting on the hypothalamic heat-regulating center. It has minimal anti-inflammatory effect at usual doses.
Tablet: Take as advised by a doctor. Common adult use: 1 tablet as needed for pain/fever; keep a gap of at least 4–6 hours between doses. Can be taken with or without food; take with food if gastric upset occurs. Do not exceed the maximum daily dose (generally 3,000–4,000 mg/day from all paracetamol-containing products).
Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, heartburn, rash, itching, elevated liver enzymes (with high dose/prolonged use)
Do not use more than the recommended dose or combine with other paracetamol-containing medicines (risk of severe liver injury). Use with caution in liver disease, chronic alcoholism, severe malnutrition, and dehydration. Seek medical help if rash, breathing difficulty, or signs of liver problems occur (yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine). Consult a doctor if fever persists >3 days or pain >5 days.
Alcohol, warfarin/other coumarin anticoagulants (with regular high-dose use), isoniazid, rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital (may increase liver toxicity), cholestyramine (reduces absorption), metoclopramide/domperidone (may increase absorption)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
