Ampicillin is a beta-lactam penicillin antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death in susceptible bacteria.
Injection to be administered by a healthcare professional only (IV/IM as prescribed). Dose and duration depend on infection type, severity, kidney function and culture sensitivity. Reconstitute/dilute as per label instructions and use immediately after preparation; complete the full prescribed course.
Injection site pain, rash, urticaria, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, elevated liver enzymes, candidiasis, fever
Prescription-only antibiotic. Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to penicillins; use caution in patients with history of allergy/asthma (risk of anaphylaxis). Use with caution in infectious mononucleosis (high risk of rash). Monitor for severe diarrhea/colitis (C. difficile) and discontinue if suspected. Dose adjustment may be needed in renal impairment. Prolonged use may cause superinfection; monitor blood counts with long courses.
Allopurinol (increased risk of rash), probenecid (increases ampicillin levels), methotrexate (reduced clearance/toxicity risk), oral anticoagulants such as warfarin (may increase INR), oral contraceptives (possible reduced efficacy—advise backup), bacteriostatic antibiotics like tetracyclines/chloramphenicol (may reduce efficacy)
Store as per label, typically below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep vial in outer carton. After reconstitution, use promptly; discard unused portion as per local guidelines.
